Ventura Townehouse resident Janis Seagrave

A Warm Welcome to Janis Seagrave!

My family had settled into a little brick house in Fairfax County, Virginia, in those post-war years, and my father worked at the Pentagon. My mom brought me into this world on April 27, 1951. I met one sister right away and waited six years for the other! We moved later to a new house a mile from George Washington’s Mount Vernon. I cherish the three years I attended a school named Burgundy Farm, where all the kids mucked out the barn and chased the goats in between Summerhill-style classes. My family relocated to southern CA when I was 11.

In 1966, I went to the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon, while my family lived and worked in Khartoum, Sudan. We were evacuated at the start of the Six Day War. Back in the states, I graduated from North Hollywood High and Cal State Northridge, attended Claremont Graduate School, and many years later, got my MLIS at San Jose State. I worked as a PR writer for Caltech, where I met my dear husband, Charles; we moved to northern San Diego County, and both worked at UCSD.

Our daughter was born in 1984, and then I made a part-time income as a storyteller. A job offer to Charles from Dolby Labs brought us to the San Francisco Bay Area, where we lived for 34 years and I worked as a children’s public librarian. Health issues have caused me to move to the Townehouse, close to my daughter’s family. I continue to write, and my first book of poetry is due out this year!
